As we pass by this year's Memorial Day on May 29th, we here at SocialDogg wanted to take a quick moment to salute those who have served for our country. We cannot show enough appreciation for the brave men and women in the Armed Forces. For today's Memorial Day article, we also wanted to salute our fellow canine companions that work to assist the Armed Forces as well.
Types of Work
The work military dogs do is invaluable to all branches of the service. This can include tracking, patrol, search and rescue, and many more. Generally, military dogs work with their human partners to discover and neutralize threats for operations. More information about the different types of work they do can be found here.
Recruitment
The process to recruit and train a dog for the military is also not easy. The training process can be expensive and intensive as well. As a result, only 50% of dogs are enlisted to serve.
There are specific breeds often chosen for this role as well. The process to select a dog includes training and certification for the role they may receive.
Retirement
After a military dog serves, they are generally available for adoption. The first choice usually goes to their handler, due to the strong bond between them. If, for some reason, the handler is unable to take care of them, the dogs may then become available to the public. However, this process is not an easy one.
Conclusion
As we remember and appreciate the service by both our brave men and women and canine companions, let's embrace this Memorial Day as an opportunity to celebrate our canine friends and the profound impact they have on our lives. Their selflessness and unconditional love deserve our recognition.
