As a dog owner, don’t you love seeing your dog wag their tail out of happiness? One of the best parts about your dog is that it doesn’t have a poker face (or tail, maybe, in their case). The only time it may become an issue is if your dog is overdoing the wagging. Yes, that’s a real thing, and it’s a condition known as Happy tail.
Happy tail, also known as kennel tail, is a condition where a dog strikes solid surfaces when wagging their tail so much that it gets injured or bruised. It may be a tale as old as time (yes, we know what we did), but don't worry, though! We've got you covered with some tips on what to do if your furry friend has a case of happy tail.
Bandage
The tail may need to be wrapped in a bandage to keep it from getting damaged again. This can be difficult to do, as it can be very sensitive and the wrap can fall off. We recommend you leave this activity to your vet to find the best way to do so. Also try not to sign this particular bandage.
Just Chill
Just like humans, dogs need rest to recover from injuries. Make sure your dog is getting plenty of rest, especially if their tail is bruised or swollen. Try to limit their activity as much as possible, and keep them away from any high-energy situations that might lead to more wagging. Maybe focus on calm activities like cuddling and belly rubs. We don’t see them complaining about that!
Vet
If your dog's tail doesn't seem to be getting better or if they seem to be in a lot of pain, it's time to talk to your vet. They may prescribe medication to help with the pain and inflammation, or they may recommend further tests to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
Closing
Remember, your dog's tail is an extension of their body language, and they use it to communicate with you. So take care of their tail, and they'll continue to wag it with joy!
